About our authors

Ann Marie McGuiness Leary began her career as a certified surgical technologist in 1975. Her professional career in the operating room spans 40+ years and includes clinical practice as a scrub and circulator, an educator and program director in several surgical technology programs, and the director of accreditation services for the Accreditation Review Council on Education in Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (ARC/STSA) for seven years. In addition to authoring various chapters in the first four editions of Surgical Technology for the Surgical Technologist: A Positive Care Approach and publishing numerous articles in The Surgical Technologist, she co-authored the 2nd edition of Pearson’s Surgical Technology Exam Review. She has also served nationally on the Association of Surgical Technologists (AST) Instructors Committee, Bylaws Committee, and Core Curriculum Review Committee, and served as a director for the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA). She has presented surgical technology-related seminars on the local, state, national and international levels. Ann is currently employed as the infection preventionist/perioperative supervisor for Graystone Eye Surgery Center in Hickory, North Carolina, where she lives with her husband, Russ, and their two cats.

Emily Rogers is in her 44th year of teaching surgical technology. She was the surgical technology department head at Spartanburg Community College, in Spartanburg, South Carolina, for 33 years, where she retired in 2008. Since her retirement, she has been an adjunct faculty member in the surgical technology program at Greenville Technical College in Greenville, South Carolina. She has served nationally on the instructor’s committee for the Association of Surgical Technologists and on the CST Exam Review Committee.
