Domestication of the bluefin tuna : thunnus, thynnus, thynnus (cahiers Options méditerranéennes Vol.60 2003)

Many who have worked in aquaculture over the last years have thought at one time or another of the possibility of rearing Bluefin Tuna (BFT) under aquaculture conditions. Controlling the life cycle of the BFT is not a simple project, it will take at least a decade, maybe even longer, to complete all aspects of the domestication process. The only way to succeed is to work together on European and global levels. It is a very complex, expensive and long-term project and there is a need to develop ways to integrate all parties involved (fishemen, farmers, scientists, environmentalists, governments) on all levels, constituting a working force which will deliver domestication and facilitate a durable, rational, environmentally friendly and sustainable farming and sea-ranching technology.
