Openfoam for Wind Energy Engineering: How to use the Open-Source Toolbox for Wind Energy-Related CFD Simulations How to use the Open Source CFD-Toolbox in Wind Energy Applications

Langue : Anglais

Auteurs :

Introduction to OpenFOAM in Wind Energy: How to Use the Open-Source Toolbox for Wind Energy-Related CFD Simulations is a concise, approachable and clear guide for wind engineers and students facing a steep learning curve in using this powerful yet complex software. The book addresses the specific problems and challenges users encounter when using OpenFOAM for wind energy applications and provides solutions, or approaches to solutions, depending on the problem.

This book is an essential introduction to an important, yet complex open-source tool, written specifically to meet the information needs of wind industry professionals, researchers and graduate students studying wind energy.

  • Addresses the specific challenges users encounter when using OpenFOAM for wind energy applications
  • Goes into detail on topics crucial for wind engineers using OpenFOAM that aren?t covered in general OpenFOAM manuals, such as turbulence models in thick airfoil simulations and simulation of rotating turbines
  • Includes downloadable code so users can quickly get started when using OpenFOAM for wind energy applications for the first time

Dr Stoevesandt is Head of the department Aerodynamics, CFD and stochastic dynamics at the Fraunhofer Institute for Wind Energy and Energy Systems. He started working on OpenFOAM in 2008 at the University of Oldenburg and built up the research group on computational fluid dynamics (CFD) for wind energy (using OpenFOAM) at the University and later at Fraunhofer IWES. In 2013 he was part of the team that started the conference series “Symposium on OpenFOAM in Wind Energy”, which is having its 5th anniversary this year. The IWES group gives courses on OpenFOAM in wind energy on a regular basis to commercial partners. It has developed a broad toolbox to achieve CFD simulations with OpenFOAM.
