Swine in the Laboratory (3rd Ed.) Surgery, Anesthesia, Imaging, and Experimental Techniques, Third Edition

Langue : Anglais

Coordonnateurs : Swindle M. Michael, Smith Alison C.

Couverture de l’ouvrage Swine in the Laboratory

For two decades, Swine in the Laboratory: Surgery, Anesthesia, and Experimental Techniques has been the most respected practical technical guide for medical and veterinary researchers using swine as experimental animals. Extensively updated and expanded since the publication of the second edition in 2007 and now sponsored by the American College of Laboratory Animal Medicine (ACLAM), it continues to be the most authoritative source of scientific and technical information on the use of domestic and miniature swine in research.

Additions to the Third Edition Include:

  • New chapters on toxicology, transgenics, cancer models, and necropsy techniques
  • An overview of porcine models that were not included in the previous edition
  • Updates to chapters on the various body systems
  • Contributions from 25 new coauthors, as well as a new coeditor
  • Significant expansions to the accompanying downloadable resources, including new normal data on farm and minipig breeds, videos on training swine and surgical procedures, updated anatomical imaging, and a colored histological atlas

Detailed sections on anesthesia, analgesia, and perioperative care present the best current practices for using swine in experimental surgery. Providing a deepened reference of the most current information and best techniques in an increasingly popular field since the publication of the first edition, this book is a vital tool in conducting the best possible research using porcine models.

Professional Practice & Development

M. Michael Swindle, DVM, is a professor emeritus and retired chairman of the Department of Comparative Medicine at the Medical University of South Carolina. He received his BS and DVM from Texas A&M University and is a diplomate of the American College of Laboratory Animal Medicine and the European College of Laboratory Animal Medicine. He was in the US Army, ran a private veterinary practice, and was at Johns Hopkins Medical School. He has received several research awards and was honored as an outstanding alumnus of the College of Veterinary Medicine. His many publications and presentations are mainly in the areas of experimental surgery, anesthesia, and swine as animal models. He continues to be active in research and teaching as a private consultant for using porcine models.

Alison C. Smith, DVM, is the interim director of the Division of Laboratory Animal Resources, interim chair and professor of the Department of Comparative Medicine, and an associate professor in the Department of Surgery at the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC). She earned her DVM from the University of Illinois. Dr. Smith’s earlier experience includes private veterinary and small animal emergency practices. She was trained in laboratory animal medicine at MUSC and is a diplomate of the American College of Laboratory Animal Medicine. Her publications and presentations are primarily in the area of swine as large animal surgical models, anesthesia and analgesia of swine, and perioperative care of swine.
