Couverture de l’ouvrage Handbook of Conservation Agriculture [Two-Volume set]

Summary

Agriculture is the backbone of economy in most countries and has a special role in the food chain. Agriculture is restricted by climate change and affects several factor of crop production, such as water availability and quality, climate, soil productivity and management, degree of farm mechanization, crop variety and fertilizers. This handbook is designed to provide a discussion of climate change, soil management, crop production, deficit irrigation and different methods for sustainable agriculture. The adoption of conservation agriculture has resulted in savings of energy, rise in soil organic matter content and biotic activity, less erosion, increased crop-water availability and thus resilience to drought, improved recharge of aquifers and reduced impact of the variability in weather associated with climate change. The book deals with the effect of climate change on agriculture and mitigation strategies. It focuses on conservation agriculture as an effective strategy for sustainable agriculture for improving soil biodiversity and food security which can be utilized for dealing these issues. It describes the application of plastics in postharvest management of crops, weed control for conservation agriculture, In-situ soil moisture conservation, hill agriculture; high altitude protected technology, applications of remote sensing and GIS for land and water management, flash floods cause and remedial measures for their control in hilly regions. The contents highlighted climate change and variability in environment which have impact on forest, infiltration of major soils, point injection nitrogen application under rice residue wheat for resource conservation. It deals with the influence of the global warming on the water resources of Indus Basin, the harmful outcomes that pose threat to the population as a whole such as floods and droughts. It is also highlighted solar energy based greenhouse modeling along with status and prospect of precision farming.
