This book deals with N-heterocyclic carbenes (NHCs) in Transition Metal Catalysis and Organocatalysis. It includes the following: An introduction giving a brief historical aspect on NHCs, the types of NHCs used in catalysis and the acronym of the most common ones. Sections describing their electronic properties (including tables of all data available on the subject), a discussion on the controversial pi-acceptor properties, their steric properties, reactions involving CO with description of systems enabling hydroformylation, as well as carbonylation and decarbonylation reactions. Discussion of the additions to multiple bonds (double and triple), involving the reduction of the bond or not, with particular attention to asymmetric reactions. Presentation of metathesis catalysts, also mentioning the Osmium complexes for these transformations despite their lack of success so far. Sections on oligomerisation and polymerisation reactions, telomerisation, and cyclisation. Overview of reactions involving aryls, with particular care given to more challenging reactions such as C-F bond activation and direct arylations. Description of dehalogenations, followed by an outline of oxidation reactions. A section involving all reactions not mentioned before, allowing room for discussion on reactions less frequently encountered in NHC-based TM-catalysts. A large section to organocatalysis promoted by NHCs.
