Couverture de l’ouvrage Tropical Diseases
Tropical diseases remain a major global concern, not onlybecause they affect a huge part of the world population, but alsobecause of the growing global movement of people associated withemployment, tourism, and war. Recent advances in molecular biology, epitomized by the genomic revolution, have brought new promises ofpowerful scientific approaches to fight such diseases. The WHO'sAdvisory Committee on Health Research recognizes this fact in itsrecommendation on Genomics and World Health and stresses the need forconcerted efforts by scientists in the developed world, where most ofthe recent advances in life sciences have occurred, and those in thetropical, mostly less developed countries, where such diseases areendemic. Tropical Diseases: From Molecule to Bedsideexemplifies such an effort. It covers a wide range of topics thatreflect perspectives of northern and southern hemispheres. Fittingly,it defines tropical diseases in a broader-than-usual manner. Forexample, the book discusses traditional tropical medicine topics ofinfectious diseases and nutritional deficiencies. These diseases arecommon in the tropics, although some are associated more with povertythan with tropical living conditions. It also deals with geneticdiseases and genomic issues that are truly associated with living inthe tropics, e.g. the thalassemias. The book begins with severalpapers describing the vast human genetic diversity of Southeast Asiaand its relationship to several genetic disorders. These papersillustrate the future direction of genomic activities in relation todisease susceptibility and resistance. The next sections deal withmalaria and four specific viral and bacterial diseases of the tropics:hepatitis B and C, tuberculosis, and leprosy. These are then followedby a section on general bacterial infection. Two papers on nutritioncomplete the volume. Proceedings of the second International Eijkman Symposium on TropicalDiseases: From Molecule to Bedside: In the Footsteps of ChristiaanEijkman, held September 2-6, 2001, in Bogor, Indonesia.
