Eine eigene Abhandlung des Lymphgefäßsystems im Handbuch der all­ gemeinen Pathologie erschien uns unerläßlich. Das 'Vissen von diesem System ist in den letzten Jahrzehnten bedeutend vermehrt worden. Auch hat. die Lympho­ logie als diagnostische Methode in den Kliniken einen breiten Raum gewonnen. In der jetzigen Phase der Forschung und praktischen Anwendung war eine Zwischenbilanz aus der Sicht der allgemeinen Pathologie wünschenswert, weil die Ergebnisse der einzelnen Forschungsrichtungen mit ihren verschiedenen Methoden in zahlreichen, oft schwer erreichbaren Zeitschriften niedergelegt sind. Entschei­ dend für unser Bemühen war aber, daß das Lymphgefäßsystem mit seiner Trans­ portfunktion einer Behandlung im Sinne der allgemeinen Pathologie zugänglich ist und eine entsprechende Betrachtung bisher weitgehend fehlte. Das Lymphgefäßsystem hat eine Hilfsfunktion für die venöse Seite des Blut­ kreislaufes. Diese Beziehung ist schon in der ersten Anlage als Venenderivat zu erkennen. Die Verwandtschaft des Lymphgefäßsystems mit dem Blutgefäßsystem schließt aber nicht aus, daß das System in der Entwicklung bald eigene Wege geht, die auch bei der vergleichenden Betrachtung zu erkennen sind. Die Erfor­ schung der anatomischen Grundlagf'n des Lymphgcfäßsystems und seiner Aus­ breitung reicht zwar' weit in die Geschichte der Medizin zurück, aber gerade im letzten Jahrzehnt sind zahlreiche Befunde, die mit Hilfe des Elektronenmikro­ skopes erhoben wurden, hinzugekommen. Die von der Anlage her engen Be­ ziehungen des Lymphgefäßsystems zur Blutbahn bleiben auch später als lympho­ venöse Anastomosen erhalten. Der Transport der Lymphe ist ohne eigene Motorik nicht denkbar.
