Lung Cancer Metastasis, 2010 Novel Biological Mechanisms and Impact on Clinical Practice

Couverture de l’ouvrage Lung Cancer Metastasis

Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer-related mortality. Metastatic lung cancer is responsible for more than ninety percent of lung cancer related deaths. However, relatively little progress has been made in understanding the process of lung cancer metastasis. The two main aims of this book are a) to introduce clinical aspects to basic scientists and basic molecular and cellular concepts to clinical investigators, in order to promote collaboration and foster much needed translational research; and b) to introduce new and emerging concepts and approaches in metastasis research to lung cancer research community at large.

In this attempt, the book will cover a broad spectrum of subjects ranging from the current trends in the clinical management of the metastatic disease, to the systems biology approach for gaining insights into the mechanisms of metastasis. Some of the subjects covered will include: defining basic hallmarks of a metastatic cell, the concept of tumor stem cells, epithelial-mesenchymal transitions, evasion of immune-surveillance, tumor-stromal interactions, angiogenesis, molecular imaging and biomarker discovery.

Lung Cancer: Overview.- Hallmarks of Metastasis.- Tumor Stem Cells and Metastasis.- Epithelial–Mesenchymal Transition as a Mechanism of Metastasis.- Mechanisms of Tumor Cell Migration and Invasion in Lung Cancer Metastasis.- Immunologic Mechanisms in Lung Carcinogenesis and Metastasis.- Angiogenesis and Angiogenic Diversity in Lung Cancer Metastasis.- Chemokines in Lung Cancer Metastasis.- Molecular Control of Lymphatic Metastasis in Lung Cancer.- Carcinoma-Associated Fibroblasts in Lung Cancer.- The Role of Tumor-Associated Macrophages and Other Innate Immune Cells in Metastatic Progression of Lung Cancer.- Experimental Animal Models for Studying Lung Cancer.- Molecular Imaging in Lung Cancer Metastases.- Biomarker Discovery for Metastatic Disease.- Current Clinical Management of Metastatic Lung Cancer.- Site-Directed Therapy for Lung Cancer Metastases.- Systems Approach for Understanding Metastasis.
Will provide important insights into current research in this area The area of lung cancer metastasis is a very timely subject in view that lung cancer remains the number 1 cause of cancer death in both men and women in this country and abroad Includes supplementary material: sn.pub/extras
