Couverture de l’ouvrage Fraulein rabbiner jonas : the story of the first woman rabbi
The heroic story of the first female rabbi In 1935, Regina Jonas became the very first woman ever to become a rabbi, only to be murdered by the Nazis in Auschwitz in 1942. During her brief life she inspired a new kind of progressive female participation in the Jewish faith. Since her death, she has remained a legend, but not very much was known about her life and work-until now. As Elisa Klapheck reveals in this moving biography, Regina Jonas had a humorous and passionate nature and was deeply beloved by all she served during the terminal crisis of their lives. Capturing her human side, the book exposes Jonas's love affair with an older rabbi and is filled with wonderful photos, documents, and letters that bring this first female rabbi to life. Elisa Klapheck (Berlin, Germany) has worked as a journalist in Berlin, but her chief interest and expertise has been in Judaic studies, including the Tanach and Talmud. In 1998 she was appointed Press Officer of the Jewish Community of Berlin, where she also cofounded the feminist Jewish organization Bet Debora.
