Couverture de l’ouvrage Dynamics of Climate Change and Water Resources of Northwestern Himalaya

This book is about the Himalayan ranges as a source of fresh water supply and a perennial store house of ice, snow and permafrost as well as a vast repository of rich biodiversity, in the light of climate change. Special attention is given to the dynamics of snow and glaciers in the northwestern Himalayas, assessment of climate change patterns, and the consequences of changes and flow regime in order to understand the behaviour of climate change in the northwestern Himalayas. The outcome of melting glaciers are pro-glacial lakes. Their increasing size and potential danger of outbursts requires systematic study, particularly where there is the risk of impact on life and property. Furthermore, the changing trend of the hydrological cycle on a regional or local scale is another area of research which calls for the attention of geoscientists. To date there is a scarcity of reliable data meaning that a concerted effort is still required by all parties.

Introduction.- Variation in the seasonal snow cover area (sca) for upper bhagirathi basin, india.- Investigating impacts of global change on the dynamics of snow, glaciers and run-off over the himalayan mountains.- Identification of glacial lake and the potentially dangerous glacial lake in the Himalayan basin.- Assessment and simulation of glacial lake outburst floods for a basin in the himalayan region.- A model study of dokriani glacier, uttarakhand.- Critical evaluation and assessment of average annual precipitation in the indus, the ganges and the brahmaputra basins, northern india.- Climate change in the north-western himalaya.

Attempts to understand impacts of climate change on the dynamics of snow, glaciers, and runoff over the Himalayan Mountains

Highlights consequences of climate change, both for the upland and downstream regions, by providing quantitative estimates of the effects on snow, glaciers, and hydrology for the understanding, planning, and management of water resources systems in the future

Provides science-based information for identifying and implementing adaptation and mitigation strategies for sustainable developments of the region
