Fred R. Schumann, PhD, is Associate Professor of Global Resources Management in the School of Business and Public Administration at the University of Guam. He has been active as a business executive in the Asia Pacific region for over 30 years, working with various multinational retail and hospitality firms. Dr. Schumann’s primary research has been in the field of international tourism and trends in consumer spending. He has extensive experience in luxury and specialty retail, with groups such as DFS Guam and The Athlete’s Foot Group, Inc. (TAF). At TAF, he was responsible for 196 retail stores in 17 countries/territories as Franchise Director for the Asia Pacific region. In 2013, Dr. Schumann was Visiting Associate Professor in the Graduate School of East Asian Studies at Japan’s Yamaguchi University. More recently (2016) he was Visiting International Researcher at the Japan Institute for Labour Policy and Training, where he spent 3 months researching best practices in areas combining rural development strategies with the promotion of cultural tourism in Japan and other countries.
