Couverture de l’ouvrage A Concise Introduction to Elastic Solids

This book provides an introduction to fundamental concepts of solid mechanics for the uninitiated. It also includes a concise review of fundamentals for those who have been away from the field for a time or are studying for a final exam or engineering license exam. The coverage ranges from fundamental definitions through constitutive equations, axial loading, torsion, bending, thermal effects, stability, pressure vessels, plates and shells, computational mechanics, and fibrous composite materials.

Mechanics of Solids.- Stress.- Strain.- Constitutive Equations.- Equilibrium.- Axial Loading.- Torsion of Cylindrical Bars.- Beam Bending.- Beam Subjected to Transverse Loading.- Beam Deflections.- Thermal Effects.- Stability.- Thin-walled Pressure Vessels.- Plates and Shells.- Computational Mechanics.- Fibrous Composite Materials.- Appendix.
Carl T. Herakovich is (the Henry L. Kinnier) Professor Emeritus in the School of Engineering and Applied Science at the University of Virginia. He received a BS in Civil Engineering at Rose Polytechnic Institute (now Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology), MS in Mechanics at The University of Kansas, and PhD in Mechanics at Illinois Institute of Technology. He has taught mechanics courses at The University of Kansas, Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology, the Illinois Institute of Technology, and in the Engineering Science and Mechanics Department at Virginia Tech for twenty years prior to joining the faculty at the University of Virginia in 1987.  He was the founder of the NASA-Virginia Tech Composites Program, Chair of the Applied Mechanics Division and Vice President of the Basic Engineering Group of ASME, President and Secretary of the Society of Engineering Science, Secretary of the U. S. National Committee on Theoretical and Applied Mechanics, and a U.S. Delegate to the International Union of Theoretical and Applied Mechanics. He is the author of Mechanics of Fibrous Composites (John Wiley & Sons, 1998) and Mechanics IUTAM USNC/TAM (Springer, 2016), and author or co-author on more than 135 scholarly papers.
