Starvation and Malnutrition Medical Nutrition and Public Health

Langue : Anglais

Coordonnateurs : Clemens Roger A., Pressman Peter, Hayes A. Wallace

Starvation and Malnutrition: Medical Nutrition and Public Health is a carefully designed selection of chapters written by experts on emerging and controversial topics in starvation and malnutrition. Edited by a distinguished nutritional scientist and public health expert, and a medical provider who has cared for patients around the world, the book is a timely contribution to the field. Chapters are presented in balanced fashion to heighten awareness and stimulate research and discussion of currently debated and special topics.

Starvation and Malnutrition: Medical Nutrition and Public Health combines the most recent basic and clinical science with subspecialty chapters and includes editorial commentary that links contributed chapters and ensures a systematic and smooth integration of material through scientific, clinical, and health policy pathways.

In addition to addressing etiologies at a high degree of resolution, this book introduces and evaluates emerging and controversial interventions across the age spectrum. Dietary interventions such as the amino acid metabolite, hydroxymethylbutyrate (HMB), L-Arginine, L-Glutamine, omega-3 fatty acids, beta-glucan, and a spectrum of food-derived bioactives, and nanoparticle-sized micronutrients will be discussed relative to restoration of age-appropriate nutritional status and functionality.

Finally, a series of special topics including refeeding syndromes and their management will be detailed for applications. Those applications include, but not limited to breastfeeding, HIV, extended starvation or fasting and even implications of potential nutritional toxicology. In addition, critical agricultural practices within the global community will be analyzed with respect to nutrition adequacy, crop management, and a spectrum of attributes that impact the safety and availability of locally grown foods pertinent to the overarching theme of curbing under and over nutrition. Emerging assessment tools including cell phone enabled software applications for anthropometric assessment of nutritional status will be described and critically examined.

  • Includes advances in science as well as clinical interventions
  • Reviews agricultural practices with respect to nutrition adequacy
  • Covers the impact of age, gender, and culture on malnutrition and starvation
  • Explores effects of fasting, breastfeeding, and more on nutrition
  • Identifies specific inflammatory mechanisms promoting accelerated catabolism
  • Provides the nutritional functionality of different dietary interventions, including bioactives and micronutrients
  • Discusses the social and political impact of malnutrition and starvation
