Our forests are in crisis. It is a crisis with many dimensions, ranging from barren land in many developing countries, through die-back of trees in polluted parts of the industrialised world, to the less tangible consequences of forest decline for planetary stability. The issues need urgent attention. Do we want to continue on a path of unsustainable development, or do we venture through the demanding and politically difficult process of policy change?
