| Commentaire | | This list is the voice of the global early warning system for farm animal resources. It covers 28 mammalian and avian species of domestic animals. It also documents the wild species (120) which are related to domestic livestock. Breeds at high risk are defined as critical or endangered based on the number of breeding females or breeding males. The book is organized into six geographical regions. Each geographical section opens with an outline of the agroecology and the genetic diversity in the region. The descriptive list outlines available details on the breeds, a further chapter considers how and why domestic breeds become extinct, lists over 300 examples of breeds already recorded as vanished. |
| Résumé | | The second edition of the World watch list for domestic animal diversity (WWW-DAD) is the voice of the Global Early Warning System for Animal Genetic Resources in helping prevent erosion and encouraging a more effective use of farm animal genetic diversity. Twenty-eight avian and mammalian species of farm animals and more than 120 species of their wild relatives are covered in this second edition. To provide the necessary interface with wildlife, this second edition of WWL-DAD introduces the wild relatives of the domestic animal species. Their geographical distribution, current status in the wild, economic importance and the threats to their survival are outlined. Speculations are made for other species which are related to domestic animals but which are, or could be, in the process of domestication for the benefit of humankind. |
