The study of chromosomes is basic to genetics. The laws of heredity embodied in genes and chromosomes are universal for all organisms, including plants, animals, and humans. However, through their behavioural characteristics and role in evolution, plant chromosomes show certain distinctive features. In addition to factors such as polyploidy, location, nature, and the level of repeat sequences, the totipotency of the plant cell enables it to have the unique potential of generating genetic diversity and chromosome variants. Chromosome Botany covers both the basics of and advances in plant chromosomes, including molecular characteristics. The book presents chromosomes as a dynamic entity against the backdrops of growth, differentiation, reproduction, and evolution. It also discusses structural details, identification of gene sequences at the chromosome level, behavioural patterns, generating specific and genetic diversity in evolution, and the genome as affected by environmental agents. This topical book will prove useful to both the beginner in plant genetics and the advanced student at graduate and postgraduate levels.
Preface. Plant chromosomes today: an introduction. Chromosome: structure and components. Chromosomes and cell division. Karyotype concept. Chromosomal changes and biodiversity. Characteristics of chromosomes in different plant groups. Chromosome behaviour in differentiation. Nuclear DNA and plant evolution. Sex chromosome differentiation. Identification of chromosome segments. External agents in the induction of gene and chromosome alterations.
