This study of earth subsurface modeling is intended for several categories of readers - geologists, engineers, and managers involved in the study and evaluation of subsurface reservoirs and hydrocarbon exploration. The authors cover progress in various fields of computer sciences such as solid modeling or knowledge engineering, which can provide useful techniques for solving several crucial issues concerning the modeling of geological reservoirs. The book will also be of interest to researchers in computer science. Problems of major importance have recently made their appearance in earth modeling and are likely to provide opportunities for researchers to implement some of the many innovative techniques that are currently being developed, on actual case studies. More broadly, earth modeling is a good example of an engineering field that involves complex methodologies, a range of skills, and multiple participants. This book will also be of interest to engineers, researchers, and students who wish to apply advanced knowledge-based techniques to complex engineering problems. Over the last two decades, earth modeling has become a major investigative tool for evaluating the potential of hydrocarbon reservoirs. During that time, significant progress has been made in interactive and user-friendly software that is commonly used by professionals for oil and gas exploration. At present, petroleum companies are facing a number of challenges in exploration. Not only must they investigate newly identified resources but, given existing hydrocarbon price fluctuations, they must also re-evaluate the potential of previously investigated reservoirs, examine new prospecting data, and consider divergent interpretations. However, significant difficulties are involved. Earth models used for oil and gas exploration and production rely on various types of raw data (seismic data, well-log data, thin-section observation, rock sample analyses). They are synthetic representations that incorporate a variety of different interpretations made at successive steps of the modeling process (seismic interpretation, stratigraphic correlations, petrological property identification) by professionals with different interests and abilities (geophysicists, geologists, petrologists, reservoir engineers). At present, the modeling procedures currently in use in the industry provide no way to link a range of data and interpretations with a final earth model. In the best cases, these links can only be retrieved by examining the written reports that accompany the model itself. This situation is very unsatisfactory, and presents a serious obstacle to evaluating the quality of a given model and improving it by modifying some of the assumptions on which it rests.

Ce nouvel Atlas des Amphibiens et Reptiles de France est le troisième réalisé par La Société herpétologique de France (SHF). Il marque un progrès considérable de nos connaissances sur la répartition des 34 espèces d'Amphibiens et des 39 espèces de Reptiles vivant en France métropolitaine, Corse comprise. En plus de ces 73 espèces autochtones, la distribution de huit espèces (six d'amphibiens et deux de reptiles) introduites par l'Homme, volontairement ou non, et implantées dans notre pays, est aussi exposée. L'ouvrage s'appuie sur 179 426 données d'observation (135 226 depuis 1990) amassées par plus de 6000 observateurs. La carte de répartition de chaque espèce, accompagnée d'au moins une photographie, est commentée par un ou plusieurs spécialistes ; des informations sur la distribution tant spatiale qu'altitudinale sont données. L'état de conservation de chaque espèce est évoqué. En complément des fiches espèces, cet ouvrage comprend aussi une mise à jour de la liste taxinomique des amphibiens et reptiles de France métropolitaine, ainsi qu'un chapitre expliquant les nombreux changements de noms de famille, de genre et d'espèce intervenus ces dernières années. La biogéographie des amphibiens et reptiles de France ne saurait être bien interprétée sans la compréhension du passé : un chapitre rédigé par deux paléontologues présente une synthèse sur les données fossiles et la mise en place de l'herpétofaune actuelle dans notre pays. Water quality modelling for rivers and streams

The implementation of the Water Framework Directive in European and many other countries of the world has its main objective to achieve “good status” for all water bodies through integrated river basin plans. For assessing the impact of measures in each river basin plan, water quality models are necessary. During the previous decades the progress in computer technology and computational methods has supported the development of advanced simulation models for pollutant transport in rivers and streams. This book is written to provide all the fundamental knowledge for the deep understanding of these models and the development of new models, which will fulfil the future quality requirements in water resources management. This book focuses on the fundamentals of computational techniques required in water quality modelling.

Advection and dispersion, with the effect of concentrated sources or sinks and the abatement of non-conservative contaminants, lead to formulation of the fundamental differential equation of pollutant transport. Its integration, according to appropriate initial and boundary conditions and with the knowledge of the velocity field, allows for pollutant behaviour to be assessed in the entire water body. An analytical integration is convenient only in the one-dimensional approach with considerable simplification. Integration in the numerical field is useful to take into account particular aspects of the water body. To secure reliability, the models require an accurate calibration, based on proper data, taken from direct measurements in the water body. Besides calibration, sensitivity and uncertainty analysis are also of utmost importance.
